Mr. Moai
A Moai statue with restored seashell eyes and top knot, displays how the Moai would have looked in its original form.
Archaeologists have documented 887 of the massive statues, known as Moai, but there may be up to as many as 1,000 on the island. Most were carved from volcanic rock between 1100 and 1680, and generally represent recently passed tribal chiefs. The Moai almost always face the village they once ‘ruled,’ as if looking after them from the afterlife.
